designer & typographer
Catherine Griffiths
b. 1966
An independent designer and typographer, with a long and strong connection to Wellington, New Zealand, I now work out of Auckland, and Paris. After graduating with a DipVCD (Visual Communication Design) from the School of Design, Wellington Polytechnic (1984–1986), I spent three years as a designer in London, and later opened my own studio in 1995 in Wellington. My work is a mix of visual communication design, self-published artist books, typography in public spaces, architecture and the landscape, and recently, writing on design. In 2002, I was awarded The Stringer, New Zealand’s highest accolade in graphic design for the Wellington Writers Walk; and in 2009, I co-organised (with Simone Wolf of Typevents Italy) TypeSHED11, New Zealand’s first-ever international typography symposium, held in Wellington. Sound Tracks is my latest public work — a visual sound test of the vowels on show at The Dowse Art Museum.
