2009 / A E I O U, a typo/sound installation – where the observer delivers the sound – constructs five vowels in steel, and lightly stacks them five metres on a first level terrace in Cuba Street, Wellington, NZ. My first public work, and first typographic project since TypeSHED11, I was commissioned to make a site-specific installation for Cubana apartments. I am busy recording the sound element of the installation, and, in the collection so far, I have I L O V E U to the wide-ranging sounding out of the vowels A E I O U – a clue to the multi-lingual world we live in. John L. Walters, editor of Eye, spoke about A E I O U in the lecture on design and music that he gave at Integrated 2009, in Antwerp.
