karen – kiwi advanced RESEARCH AND EDUCATION NETWORK VISUAL IDENTITY

Infinity, designed by Chester and Rick Valicenti (Thirstype) in 2001, was chosen as the typeface for this structure of K’s representing the network and it’s reach globally. KAREN is stepping out to take over and be one of the fastest research networks around. Incidentally, K is a letterform that does just that – it’s form has the stride and reach to achieve this. What I love, is the underlying sense of fun in the network world – that KAREN is New Zealand’s response to UKERNA’s JANET – the UK’s education and research network.

When I presented the concept for the logo, one of the Board members on REANNZ, a scientist, saw in the table-like K, the lowercase version of the lambda symbol. Lambda is the 11th letter of the Greek alphabet, and among several things, it represents the wavelength of a wave in physics. This discovery led to the changes in tonal colour within each form.
