»SHREDDED!«
[LUXON QUOTES] RUBBISH COLLECTION
2026
For Checkmate, an exhibition currently on at COMMODE [@commode_commode], Te Whanganui-a-Tara, curated by DJCS, ‘where residue is brought to the forefront.’ Over 120 artists were invited to contribute one piece of rubbish.
CG produced »SHREDDED!« taking six quotes by Aotearoa New Zealand’s prime minister Christopher Luxon, typesetting into the poster format, printing then shredding, using her late mother-in-law’s A4 shredder. She delivered a clear rubbish bag filled with the shredded words. Made in a day. Posted the next.
Each poster includes an Internet-sourced quote by Luxon, and image, enlarged and zoomed into the proponent’s face, pixelated. The pixel typeface is Lo-Res, designed in 1985 by Zuzana Licko, who later developed the bitmap version, used in this series, released by Emigre in 2001. Composed in the guise of a type specimen poster, a format regularly used by CG to make a point, a protest or, simply shred some light on the subject ...
[The shredded posters are a nod to friend and typographer Len Cheeseman who, in 1994, invited to speak on New Zealand magazine design, walked into the auditorium at the then Wellington City Gallery with two rubbish bags full of shredded paper, and told the audience “here’s what I think about NZ magazines” and promptly emptied the shreds at his feet onto the stage. ACP Magazines walked out.]
